The meaning of Luther has many impacts on the church today. Martin Luther thought that Christian education should be of great importance. Did you know that Lutheran churches could not open when they came to America unless a school accompanied them? They felt so strongly that children needed a place to learn about God. Yet, the education also greatly benefited the community. That impact is still being felt almost 200 years later.
Remembering the Reformation
As a child, I learned all about the people of the Reformation. I was taught about why and how it happened in extensive detail. However, I rarely remember learning why this was important for my faith today. When I teach my students (who are often not Lutheran), this is my main focus. They don’t need to remember this man named Martin Luther. I want them to remember the grace and truth that he desperately wanted to share with the people. I want them to share that same message today.
Lessons about the Meaning of Luther
How are you teaching your students about the Reformation today? Personally, I love the no prep packets that I created. I love the topics they cover and the way they are presented. However, I don’t always have time for a full unit like that. Then, I love flip books, mini books, and sketch notes that take one to two days. Those are great when you don’t have time for a full unit. No matter what other activities that I use, I always have Luther on the Ledge moving around my room. There is an escape room that is very popular with teachers. Finally, there is a craftivity that could be used as a hallway display and a bulletin board display that is easy to assemble for a middle school classroom.
