Craft projects create a visual reminder for students to learn about the liturgical calendar. The church year reminds us as Christians that the holidays are not merely secular events, but they have a purpose. They organize and shape the Christian story throughout the year as we remember what God has done for us. We are a people that have been set apart from the world through the gift of our Savior.
A Classroom Altar
As we prepare for devotions each morning, my students turn on the battery-operated candles and grab the devotion book from the altar. On Wednesdays, they take the offering bowl from the same place to take it to chapel. While this is a fixture in our classroom, they were struck with surprise when I asked one of them to change the parament from green to red for Reformation. This prompted a whole discussion about the multiple parament colors and their purposes.
Christian Craft Projects
Would you like a year’s worth of craft projects for your students? They make wonderful hallway decorations or help parents understand these important moments in the church year. They include a fill-in-the-blank activity to teach students about the day. Then, students can summarize what they learned in one of three different writing paper options. Next, they can color the image before assembling all of the pieces to make a project for the hallway. My students love to make them!
