Daniel is a significant figure in the Old Testament because he was God’s prophet to the exiled people of Judah. Daniel was also part of some hair-raising adventures with a den of lions due to his refusal to comply with the King of Babylon’s idolatrous demands. He is a wonderful example of courage in the face of persecution and faith even to the point of death.
Sleeping with Lions
When we read the story of Daniel in the Lion’s Den, my youngest son likes to play the part of the angel and touch each lion on the mouth pretending to shut it and keep Daniel safe. He often wishes he could have been Daniel that night, curling up with an immense lion instead of a small house cat secure in the peace that only trust in God can give. I imagine Daniel enjoyed that peace even before he realized he was not going to be a lion’s dinner. Faith in God’s faithfulness has that effect.
