3 Powerful Lessons about the Pentecost Belief

Pentecost is a great holiday! The church building (and sometimes the congregation) is robed in red. The music is loud and strong and there are pictures of flames everywhere. It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of the day. It’s great to feel the Spirit working. But the message of Pentecost does not last for just one day. The work of the Spirit in us does not finish when the red paraments are put back in the box. The message of Pentecost is one that should stay with us all year.

The Church’s Birthday

When the Holy Spirit descended on the apostles that first Pentecost, it marked the beginning of the church. The Holy Spirit would dwell with Christians, living within them, making them disciples and pointing them to Jesus. As if that wasn’t enough, Pentecost also revealed that the gift of the Spirit was not just for the disciples or even just for the Jews. God’s Spirit and the gift of salvation was for all nations! That includes you and me, all our students and every single person we meet. What a great day to celebrate!

Lessons About our Pentecost Belief

Sometimes it can be a difficult message to teach especially to our youngest students so use these resources to help! A Pentecost mini book is a great way to introduce the coming of the Holy Spirit to those just starting to understand what it means to be a Christian. Use this craft and writing activity to encourage your students to apply the message of Pentecost to their lives. Those in third grade or higher would love making a lapbook to remind them of the meaning of our Pentecost belief. Celebrate the Holy Spirit in your classroom!
