4 Ways to Teach about the Ascension of Jesus

Easter is the highlight of the church year. There can be no doubt about that. Nothing can beat the open tomb, the promise of resurrection and the beautiful music that fills the church. Which is why the ascension of Jesus can seem like a little bit of a letdown at times. Jesus ascends to heaven to take his place at the right hand of the Father, the disciples are left alone, and Christians are left wanting more. Nevertheless, teaching your students the meaning of the ascension can turn this story from a low point in the story of Jesus to a high point that gives joy and hope to the Christian.

Jesus Reigns

Did you ever realize that after the ascension of Jesus, the Bible says that the disciples returned rejoicing! That seems a bit odd. Because if your best friend just left for an unforeseen amount of time, would your first reaction be one of joy? However, the disciples recognized that by ascending to heaven, Jesus was taking his rightful place on the throne. Furthermore, they knew he was no longer just their teacher, but he was king over all creation. Meaning he had power and authority over everything, and they were a part of his kingdom forever. The source of their joy was certainly this. Even though he was no longer physically present with them, they could see his hand in every single part of their lives. What a powerful message for Christians today!
