5 Excellent Ash Wednesday Lutheran Teaching Ideas

Are you looking for Ash Wednesday Lutheran ideas? Teachers can introduce the Ash Wednesday tradition and discuss its spiritual significance with their students. They can read and reflect on scripture passages from the Old and New Testaments related to repentance, forgiveness, and renewal. Encourage your students to focus their prayers around the confession of sins and requests for God’s blessings in the coming year. We can talk to our students about ways to live out our faith throughout the Lenten season by taking practical steps such as giving generously to charity or volunteering with a service organization in need of assistance.

A Special Treat

I grew up in a German immigrant community in rural Michigan, but the surrounding cities were filled with Polish immigrants who brought the delicious paczki (pronounced poon-shki) with them to Fat Tuesday. This day marks the moment before Ash Wednesday when we rid our houses of special treats to focus on Lent. The paczkis of my childhood are so wonderful. They are commonly found in all the grocery stores and often given out to Lutheran school students. Since moving away in my adult life, I have yet to experience a treat as good as those. Most of the time, they are just tough to find. While these treats have little to do with Ash Wednesday, they are my earliest memory of the significance of this important season.

Ash Wednesday Lutheran Teaching Ideas

Are you looking for Ash Wednesday activities for your Lutheran classroom? You could look into a mini book that covers an overview of this religious event, in simple language and with pictures students can color. If you want something to decorate the halls, you could engineer a craftivity with a writing component. For your upper elementary classes, consider a detailed lapbook, or for middle schoolers, sketch notes might be more suitable. All of these activities provide fun and educational ways to celebrate Ash Wednesday.
