I loved the Bucket Filler books when they first became popular. I created a classroom management tool that revolved around the concept. I purchased a small metal bucket and wrote Philippians 4:8 on it. Then, students put colored pom-poms into the bucket for small acts of kindness in the classroom. There was no reward for it, but it was a simple way to recognize and encourage kindness in the classroom.
The Best Bucket Filler Ever
I always love to see new Christian books to put in a classroom library. This one has so many good lesson plan tie-ins to use as a read-aloud. In the beginning, it talks about how God created us to do good works for others. This would be an excellent connection to the creation story. There is also a selection about God creating each and every one of us. What a beautiful way to learn about Right to Life Sunday. This book could be used in conjunction with planting seeds as students plant kindness to others. Whether you use it to introduce classroom management or as a lesson about kindness later in the year, it is a great way to reinforce the second greatest commandment.
My Review
I truly enjoyed this book and will use it in my classroom. However, I want to provide you with an honest review of my take on the book. As I read, I noticed a young Jewish boy in a drawing. I also didn’t love the term happiness as it was used at certain points. Yet, I think these two points provide opportunities to teach discernment and focus on kindness towards others. The book also talks about creation, God’s plan for our lives, free will, prayer, and the importance of witnessing. Overall, I found it to be a worthy and excellent read-aloud for my students.
