What’s the deal with Epiphany? Is it just a way to drag out the Christmas season a few more weeks? And why does it have such a funny name? Without understanding the meaning of the season, it can seem to be nothing more than the day the wise men get to join the shepherds at the manger sitting on your mantel. Wise Men?
“Wise men” is an interesting title for the group of three that visited a year or two after Jesus was born. The original Greek word should probably be translated “magicians” and because they were from pagan lands, these “wise men” were probably practitioners of the dark arts. Puts an interesting spin on all the songs and Christmas cards featuring noble looking kings bowing at a manger. But the fact that these were probably the last people on earth you would expect to be visiting Jesus is exactly the point of Epiphany. Jesus was already revealing to the world who he was. He was a Savior who came to seek those who had run the farthest from him. He came for heathen magicians, and he came for you, me and every student in your classroom regardless of who they are or what they have done.
