Oh look, another Old Testament book that is almost never read! Fortunately, it comes right after Ezra so if you’re a practiced page turner you can skip both in one go. In all seriousness though, Nehemiah has a great lesson for our students today. The world is filled with uncertain and scary things especially when looking at it from a child’s perspective. However, the book of Nehemiah can give us comfort and security knowing God is our protector.
A Wall of Protection
After Ezra arrived in Jerusalem to teach the people God’s law, things improved among the returned exiles to some degree. However, there was still a major problem. Jerusalem had no city wall meaning enemies could come and go as they pleased throughout the city. Consequently, the people were not safe. In Babylon, Nehemiah heard this sad news and asked to be sent to Jerusalem to help the stalled building project get off its feet. The king granted him permission. Under his capable leadership, the people adopted a new approach and finished Jerusalem’s wall in record time. The city was strong and protected once again. God is still building walls for us today. The church is a wall to keep us safe from the attacks of the enemy. Lutheran schools are a wall for our children that give them a sheltered and protected place to grow strong in their faith.
