3 People at the Very First Christmas

The first Christmas lacked the bustle and bling that accompanies the holiday season today. In fact, the Bible only mentions three people who were there to witness the birth of the Savior–Mary, Joseph, and the shepherds. Each of these offers a unique perspective on Jesus’ coming at Bethlehem. When God sent his Son into the world, these were the people he told first.

Unexpected Characters

Who would you expect it to have been? Perhaps a king. A prophet would have been a good choice. A righteous priest surely deserved to be there. But the presence of these three at the manger that night was already showing what kind of Savior God had sent. There was nothing that a humble, small town girl, a simple carpenter or a rough group of shepherds had to offer this new king and that was the point. God was coming to give it all and wanted nothing in return.
