Do you find yourself looking for the easy way out? I know I do, and I suspect it is part of our sinful human nature to find not necessarily the best way to do things but rather the most comfortable way. As someone once said, “We do these things not because they are easy but because we thought they would be easy.” Middle schoolers are no different. Trying to get them to put effort into something that is not an activity they enjoy is like pulling teeth. So what happens when they exhibit that same apathy during religion class?

Ideas for Middle School
Try reading your Bible passages using different translations to come at the text from different angles. Use Bible story books or video clips to enhance their understanding of the stories. If you are working through one of Paul’s letters plan discussion questions that are relevant and thought-provoking. Middle schoolers love application and a chance to share their thoughts on a subject. Allowing them to talk in small groups and providing them with interesting and creative note sheets can also help make religion class exciting and alive with little Christians eagerly learning God’s truth.
Bible Study Guide Resources
Teach by Faith has developed a great middle school curriculum that recognizes middle schoolers love of application, discussion and creativity. Each lesson in this Old Testament middle school curriculum includes a passage of Scripture to be read (by the end of the year, you will have read the entire Old Testament!) and a interesting and engaging Bible study guide page to foster discussion, creativity and personal application. It is sure to be a blessing to your class!
