How do you get ready for Christmas? If you are the head coordinator for holidays in your household as I am in mine, then I’m sure your list is pretty long and you’re probably feeling a little anxiety just thinking about the Christmas season! But Advent can be a wonderful time to prepare our hearts and minds for Christ’s coming. While we’re decorating our houses, we can also be making our hearts ready for Jesus. Observing Advent with candles can help us do that!

Advent With Candles
The Advent wreath gives us four chances to do just that. Each week that we light a new candle, we are given something new to ponder as Christ’s coming gets closer and closer. Week one we fill our hearts with hope. Not a wishful thinking kind of hope, but a certain trust in the promises of Christ. The second week gives an opportunity to practice peace. Delight in the right relationship you have with God through the sacrifice of Jesus. Everyone’s favorite pink candle is lit on week three reminding us of the joy we have that is greater than any happiness that the world has to offer. Finally, on the last week we remember God’s love for us and the love we show our neighbor. What a beautiful picture of what Advent and Christmas are all about.
Advent Resources
If you’d like to share these powerful messages with your students but lack an Advent wreath for your classroom, never fear! Teach by Faith has a great Advent project that will help your class observe the season. It features a writing activity that allows them to reflect on the meaning of Advent, and a creative activity that gives them a chance to construct their own Advent wreath. This is a great project to decorate hallways or send home for families!
