Do you use an Advent calendar? Each of my kids has his own calendar that he opens each morning of December. They aren’t treat filled but just reveal a Christmas picture behind each door. Even though they have done the same calendar since they were little, they still enjoy opening the doors and acting surprised over the picture inside. My favorite calendar though is a homemade one made by my oldest son when he thought I would feel left out without my own door to open each morning. Each door corresponds to a number and a letter so it doubles as a Christmas alphabet. Looking at it this year made me wonder about the background surrounding the season of Advent.

Advent Background
The exact year of the origin of Advent is unknown but it is thought to have started in the 400’s when the Bishop of Tours proclaimed a 40 day fast to prepare for the celebration of Christmas. The first Advent wreaths made their appearance a little later, probably sometime in the 1800’s. The first wreaths were made with an impressive 24 candles but were soon replaced by a much more manageable four. Finally, the tradition of the Advent calendar complete with little doors to open was said to have started in the 1800s by a harried mother who was tired of answering the question, “How many days ’til Christmas?!”
