manger heart

Is Your Heart a Manger?

I was born far up north in a little town in Minnesota. I find it rather ironic now because I hate cold weather. Give me year-round summer any day! My husband was born in a  little town in the mountains of North Carolina. Although he hasn’t lived there for years he lights up in a special way when anyone mentions his state. There’s something special about the place where you were born. It’s a tiny little part of your identity, what makes you who you are.

Meaning of Nativity

The meaning of nativity is, quite simply, “birth.” It doesn’t necessarily refer to Christ’s birth but has taken on that significance as the only people who use the word anymore are Christians discussing Christ’s coming at Bethlehem. I am reminded of the line in “O Little Town of Bethlehem” that asks Jesus to “be born in us today.” And I think we can talk about the nativity in a different way as well. Each time a new Christian is baptized Christ is being born into their hearts. Their heart becomes his manger. What a great and mighty mystery that the God of the universal would choose a manger in Bethlehem and would choose me.

Christmas Craft

Explore the wonders of the nativity story with your class this year with this Chrstimas craft and writing activity. It’s perfect for first through third graders. Your students will complete a writing assignment about the meaning of Christmas and be able to design a manger and a Baby Jesus to decorate the top of their essay. These look wonderful as hall decorations and make a great way to witness to families!
