Do you observe a Lenten fast? Each year my husband and I pick something to give up for the forty days before Easter. As they get older my sons are participating in this tradition as well. Sometimes it will be a particular treat we enjoy or a pastime that we could do without, but the rule is it has to be something that will be missed. Needless to say, my sons’ attempts to give up school or Brussels sprouts did not exactly pass the test. I have heard some say that instead of giving something up for Lent they add an act of kindness to each day instead. It’s a nice idea, but it misses the reason for the Lenten fast.

Building Character
When we are consciously forced each day to say, “no” to something we so desperately want to have, we are shaping our character and curbing our will. It’s all too easy to give in to our every whim in a culture when we can simply pick up our phone and, with a few taps, find whatever our hearts desire. This Lenten fast is teaching us how to say, “no,” when bigger temptations inevitably come knocking. Lent is a great time for this kind of character building and hardening of purpose. As we refuse the cookies or put down the phone for 40 days, think about it like a character work-out. What kind of muscles will you be sporting by Easter?
