I do not remember celebrating Ascension Day when I was in school. I can see why. Easter has just passed, and honestly my teachers’ minds were probably on making it to May rather than on coming up with creative and super-engaging projects. Plus, the holiday is not typically all that interesting. There are no trees or presents or candy or catchy tunes to capture the attention of young people. But the holiday remains significant in the life of the church because it marks the beginning of Jesus’ reign as king and the unofficial birthday of the church (which happens officially on Pentecost!)

4 Great Ideas
So here are four ideas to celebrate Ascension Day in the classroom this year. First, make crowns! When Jesus ascended into heaven, he sat down at the right hand of the Father and took up his title of King of Kings. Second, find a small box for each student and hide a dove inside each. Have them wrap their box in fun wrapping paper to be opened on Pentecost. Before his ascension, Jesus promised that he would send a gift to the disciples on Pentecost. Your students will be so excited waiting to open their present! Third, practice telling the story of Jesus by making Ascension cards for each class in your school. Deliver them together after talking about the Great Commission. Finally, crack open the hymnal and sing a rousing chorus of “A Hymn of Glory Let Us Sing”.
