Happy birthday, church! Pentecost is usually regarded as the day God created the church. Jesus ascended into heaven and sent the Holy Spirit as a helper to the disciples. God’s spirit was poured out on all believers that day in a way that it had never been before. Tongues of fire appear, the story of Jesus is preached, and thousands are saved that day. What a birthday celebration! God certainly knows how to throw a party.

Pentecost Today
Compared to Pentecost, our church services seem a little dull! Sometimes we might look at the miracles the early church experienced in the book of Acts and wish we could see a little of that power at work in today’s church. But that same Spirit that descended on the disciples in the upper room lives and works in Christians today! We may not have tongues of fire, but we have the waters of baptism. We may not be able to speak in new languages, but the same story is in our heart and on our lips. God’s church is just as alive and well as it was on its birthday so many years ago because the church does not rely on people but rather on the unchanging, ever-present helper who has been here since the beginning–the Holy Spirit.
