prayer of trust

A Powerful Prayer of Trust

When he was very little, my youngest son struggled with remembering the words to the Lord’s Prayer. He would mix up the parts or leave out a phrase or two. I came up with a set of actions to go with the words that would give him cues as to what part came next. The one that stuck in his mind the most was two hands outstretched ready to receive his daily bread. He’s five years old now and knows the Lord’s Prayer well, but when we say it in church he will still stretch out his hands when we reach the fourth petition.

The Lord’s Prayer

This attitude of kneeling before God with nothing asking for everything is really the attitude of the entire Lord’s Prayer. We are children coming to our Father asking for his blessings and care recognizing that we have nothing apart from him. The Lord’s Prayer helps us to understand that we depend on him for every good thing, protection, forgiveness, daily needs and life itself. It increases our trust in God alone at times when we may feel like putting that trust in ourselves, our possessions or and people around us.
