My middle son is such a joy. He is smart and funny and kind-hearted, but he is not a fun movie companion! Every scene ends with a question. “Why did that happen?” “Why did he say that?” “Is he bad?” “Is he good?” “That wasn’t the right thing to do, was it?” “What does __________ mean?” “Is that real?” The list could go on and on. And usually, a reply just prompts another question. He likes to know the reason behind everything! But our human fondness for figuring everything out can get us into trouble when we start applying that thinking to God.

Why Lutheran?
Some Christians put their own reason ahead of what God has revealed in Scripture. They like to try to explain God or defend God as if he needed our human stamp of approval. But Lutherans are content to let God be God. We take God at his word even when it might not make sense to us. How can Jesus be bodily present in Holy Communion? Not sure, but God says it so we believe it! Why do bad things happen to good people? Not sure, but God is in control of everything so we trust him. Lutherans are not trying to take the “God spot” for ourselves. We are content to be creatures, and what a beautiful thing existence that is.
