no worry

Jesus Teaches Us Not to Worry

The Sermon on the Mount is my youngest son’s favorite story to read from his before bedtime Bible story book mostly because it features a picture of a bird pushing a grocery cart and a flower sewing itself a shirt. The picture makes him giggle every time. It makes me smile to see him laugh, but I’m also a little convicted by the Sermon on the Mount each time it comes up in the lectionary or at bedtime with my boys. Jesus tells us not to worry about what we will eat or what we will wear, but as a mom that’s almost my entire job description! I spend a large part of my day worrying about what we will eat and wear.

Trusting Instead of Worrying

We are so good at worrying. It gives a sense of control over whatever situation is making us anxious. We tell ourselves, “If I just think about it enough then everything will turn out okay!” But Jesus is reminding us in the Sermon on the Mount that our lives are in his hands not our own! We are not the ones in charge, and what a beautiful reminder that is. Christians can find a tremendous amount of peace during anxious or uneasy times because our trust is in God’s love and promises rather than our own feeble strength.
