Martin Luther is certainly a compelling historical figure. He quite literally changed the world through his writings, teachings and outspoken criticism of the problems he saw in the church. My children love hearing his story, especially the part with the thunderstorm! They find Luther very relatable when he is cowering underneath a tree for fear of thunder and lightning. But for me, I enjoy hearing about Luther’s stand at the Diet of Worms where he was blindsided with a command to recant his writings or face the wrath of the church.

Reluctant Reformer
Some retellings of the life of Martin Luther will paint the father of Lutheranism as a bold, fearless rebel bravely standing before the emperor and firmly stating, “Here I stand! I can do no other!” But Luther was not a willing reformer. He took several days before answering the emperor’s demand to recant. He ended his famous speech with, “God help me. Amen.” Instead of a loud, fiery rabble-rouser, we get the picture of a Christian trying to be faithful in the middle of great difficulties relying wholly on God’s strength rather than his own abilities. And that, my friends, is a truly relatable historical figure.
