Everyone knows the story of the prodigal son. We shake our heads and sigh when we hear about how he leaves his father’s house to live it up with prostitutes and sinners. We nod in sympathy when he comes to the end of everything and finds himself lower than a slave feeding pigs of all things! Our heart warms when he goes back to his father and is received as a son again, and we ponder which of the two sons we, unfortunately, resemble.

Jesus the Prodigal Son
I wonder if Jesus was speaking from personal experience when he told the parable of the prodigal son. After all, he also had left his Father to consort with prostitutes and sinners. He also would come to the end of everything and be made nothing, even less than a slave, because of the consequences of sin. He also would make his way back to his Father and be exalted again to the status of Son. Jesus is the ultimate prodigal son who willingly suffered the consequences of sin that was not his own in order to win back son status for us.
