When I was in fifth grade my teacher gave each student in her class a copy of the liturgical calendar wheel. My classmates and I colored each section the correct liturgical color and used it throughout the year to keep track of the seasons in the Lutheran church year. To make it interesting, my teacher would often bring in a liturgically themed treat at the start of each new season– pretzels for Reformation Day, Advent wreath cookies for the first Sunday in Advent and so on.

But if one has not had that early exposure to the church year all the colors and symbols and special Sundays can be a little overwhelming! Why does the green season last forever? Is Advent purple or blue? Why do we celebrate the new year in December? And, admittedly, the liturgical church calendar wheel does little to help the youngest students appreciate the traditions surrounding each part of the church year.
