Advent activities can be an important part of your classroom leading up to Christmas. As Christians, we wait with eager anticipation for the coming of Christ with calendars, songs, and special services. We are ready to celebrate the birth of Jesus as a baby on this earth who becomes a part of us. Yet, we are preparing for the one and only true God, the Immanuel who came to conquer sin and death for us.
Advent Activities for Sunday School
One of my favorite Sunday school teachers was in fifth and sixth grade. Now, truly, the best part was their authentic conversations about faith and their passion for the youth in the church. However, as a twelve-year-old kid, I thought that the greatest part of their Sunday school class was the snacks. It was the first time a teacher brought us a snack every week. How cool was that? One week, she made us green Advent wreath cornflake treats with a ton of green food coloring. I mean, they were the color of John Deere paint – probably an added bonus in farm country.
Advent Resources
As great as those yummy treats were, I am grateful for the many resources that are now available to teach students the true meaning of Advent (but feel free to bring the treats!). Students can use mini books to provide a visual representation of content. They can use flipbooks in the same way. A lap book helps students understand more of the challenging content of Advent. If you prefer crafts in the classroom, you can also use one designed around the Advent candles and Advent wreath. Finally, you can create a simple bulletin board for your middle school classroom.
