This spring we had a robin make a nest right outside the windows of the sunroom on the back of our house. The boys could sit at the table doing their homework with a robin sitting on her eggs two feet away from them. She was a household celebrity. Every morning they would say, “hello” to her, and one of them would be sure to check on her before bed each night. Which made it all the more devastating when they found her dead on the ground one morning and her babies gone from the nest. We’re not sure what attacked the nest that night, but there was a deep feeling of hostility toward raccoons for a long time after.

A Season of Sacrifice
My sons had a funeral for the little robin and named her Plucky. Instead of a household celebrity she has become a household hero. Why you may ask? There were definite signs of a struggle around the little nest that morning. The mommy robin had shed her blood to protect her babies. When faced with a predator it would have been easy for Plucky to fly away, but she chose to sacrifice herself for those little robins she loved. In a small way, this story points to the bigger story of a God who sacrificed his life for sinners who ran from him. That’s the story of Lent.
