Ash Wednesday craft lessons are a visual reminder to your students about the 40 days of Lent. Ash Wednesday begins 46 days before Easter (Sundays don’t go in the count). Christians use this time as moments of reflection, fasting, remembrance, and ultimately, celebration. Jesus died on the cross for our sins, and is a moment to rejoice in!
The Importance of the Season
Early in my career, I used to work in the after-school program in my ministry. One year, there was a little boy that would spend every last minute in the program long after his friends had been picked up. We liked to spend time out on the playground enjoying the sunshine. He would joyfully sing, “I will make you fishers of men!” at the top of his little lungs on a regular basis while we played. It was very clear that he understood the meaning of his Lord and Savior.
Ash Wednesday Craft for Your Classroom
Are you interested in using an Ash Wednesday craft idea in your classroom? It is helpful to begin with a review of Ash Wednesday, its meaning, and the traditions behind it. Then, I like to provide students with a writing prompt that will help them retell the information about the holy day. I provide them with writing paper that is suitable to their grade level. Next, students can color and personalize a student head to attach to their “shirt.” The “shirt” is a piece of 9×12 construction paper. They can glue their writing activity to the shirt and attach the head. They make a great bulletin board or hallway decoration.
