National Lutheran Schools Week 2020 is coming soon. It has been a celebration for me for a long time. I really took a moment to think about this for a second. Outside of kindergarten, I have always been in a Lutheran school. Now that I am thinking about this, why does the Concordia System not celebrate NLSW? To my knowledge, I don’t think they join in this crazy fun. Since I was still in a Lutheran school, I’ll count this as my 30th celebration of NLSW. That is a lot of dress-up days. I won’t even begin to lament my first grade NLSW. It was the only year that my school hosted Grandparents’ Day, and I got the chicken pox. I still haven’t gotten over it.
NLSW as a Teacher
However, the feelings of joy and excitement that come from silly clothes, movie days, and roller skating field trips take on a whole new meaning when they come from the perspective of staff meetings, carefully coordinated schedules, classroom management, and extra responsibilities for the week. If this is your 50th National Lutheran Schools Week or your first one as a teacher, you may be feeling a little overwhelmed. If you are looking for some fresh ideas or a pre-planned week for your classroom, keep reading!
National Lutheran Schools Week 2020 Activities
#LuthEd does a wonderful job of selecting a yearly theme with Bible passages, daily topics, and so much more. My school usually follows along with that theme, but you could also select one that ties into your yearly school theme or a theme from previous years (I keep previous themes on sale at a discounted price). Next, we develop a worship service that involves the students through skits, songs, readings, or other helpers.
Then, the fun begins! Our student council selects the dress-up days. When I am selecting activities for my resource, I try to choose something that can be used as a faith lesson and a classroom activity. I also look for a school-wide activity, a service project, and a family fun night. The current theme leads to many of these activities revolving around simple service projects that could be done within the guidelines of social distancing. I even wanted to ensure that you could send the family fun night activities home for a safe night with individual families. Finally, I consider some activities to connect with the local community and the greater Lutheran school community.
