Excellent Maundy Thursday Activities for Kids

The word Maundy means command. It can refer to the command to celebrate Holy Communion as the body of Christ, but it also refers to Jesus’ words after he finished washing the disciples’ feet. “If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.” In a world where people are told to put themselves first and live only for their own happiness, Jesus’ command sounds quite peculiar. Teach your students how to wash each other’s feet!

Dirty Jobs

Who does the particularly nasty chores around your house? My husband and I each have a list of the things for which we are responsible. It was never an actual verbal discussion, but the list is there, and we both know it. His list: cat vomit, dead things in our yard, blocked drains and toilets. My list: child vomit, fish tank algae, bloody wounds. The reason for the lists? There are some jobs I just won’t touch. That’s what Jesus’ command is all about. It goes beyond simply “being nice” or doing the kind thing. It’s about pouring yourself out for those around you and doing the things that no one else will do. It’s putting everything about you aside as you attend to the needs of your neighbor. That’s a message that is not popular in today’s world, but it is what makes the life of a Christian so radically different from those around us.
