God in the Book of Esther

We have all gone through times in our lives when it feels like God is silent. During a particular difficult struggle it may seem as if God has abandoned you. When you are trying to make an important decision with no clear answer sometimes it feels like God has put you on hold. What do we do during those times, and how can we prepare our students for such a time as this? The book of Esther has something to teach us about the times when God is quiet.

When God is Quiet

The book of Esther stands out among the other books of the Bible for several reasons, the most interesting one being something you may have never noticed. God is never mentioned in the book of Esther. He never speaks. There are no heavenly visions. There are no words from a prophet. Divine intervention during a difficult period is nonexistent. God is quiet. Yet the actions of Mordechai and Esther speak volumes. These two do not despair or turn away. They cling to the promises of God and follow what they know to be his will even when it is uncomfortable or dangerous. God has promised always to be with his people, and his promises remain sure and certain even during the times when he feels far away.
