Google Classroom for students was barely heard of over a year ago. Over the course of the pandemic, we have learned more tips for online learning than we ever would have imagined. We have not only figured out how to teach students online, but we also taught them through the distractions of video games, endless weeks of lockdown, and so many random snacks (dry hot chocolate mix for breakfast, anyone?).
The Benefits for Students
In 2009, I worked at a 1:1 device school. This was long before every student across the country had a personal iPhone. Therefore, I have always enjoyed using technology in my classroom. In October 2019, I decided to take a conference about the benefits of Google Classroom for students. At the time, I thought it was important for students to have tips for online learning. I figured that this type of classroom would be common in their higher education experience, and I wanted ideas to prepare them for it. I returned from the conference, found some great math lessons, and started teaching my students how to navigate Google Classroom. Six months later, I had no idea how valuable these skills would be.
Google Classroom beyond the Pandemic
I was so thankful for the skills that my students had going into the pandemic. While they hit the ground running with learning, I had time to troubleshoot for other teachers and students at my school. I was also able to create digital distance learning resources for Holy Week. When lockdown went from two weeks to two months, I added a second unit about the book of Acts. Then, I made one more unit about the fruits of the Spirit for anyone who might need a few more lessons to wrap up the school year. Eventually, I am adding a year’s worth of Bible digital resources.
What are the benefits of Google Classroom for students beyond the pandemic? First, they find these lessons really engaging. We have been using them for two months, and although I asked if they wanted something else, the vote was unanimous for Google Classroom. Second, they allow for differentiation with ease. You can customize the number of slides for each student as you see fit. Take a few out for students who need more time or add a few for students who need a challenge. Third, they provide students with the online learning skills that they will need in the future. Our students will need to learn to navigate online learning modules with ease. Help them to do so by continuing with Google Classroom once you are in-person learning again.
