Martin Luther on the Ledge is a great way to implement a daily review of the Reformation. If your students spend about 20 days learning about the Reformation movement, they are more likely to remember what was taught. It may give them a preview of the deeper lessons that you are teaching. You can assess their knowledge of Reformation Day before you teach it. Finally, it might simply give them exposure to the Reformation content that they have never seen before.
Reformation in my Classroom
I have been using Luther on the Ledge for several years. My students love to come in every morning and scour the room for Little Luther. Of course, they love it when they get little presents. They learn all sorts of vocabulary from the Reformation word search. They learn about the Book of Concord and the 95 theses. We make Luther’s seal into a yummy treat. I can squeeze it in amongst my Bible lessons.
Using Martin Luther on the Ledge
Luther on the Ledge has been such a fun addition to my classroom! However, there are some simple steps that make it easier to implement. First, I get everything ready to go in advance. I print out all of the cards with the daily activities. I organize them on a ring clip to make them easy to access. Then, I print any paper activities that I plan to use – they are included.
Next, I collect all of the items that I need for the activities and put them in a bit. Some of the items are perishable, and I put them on my grocery list with the date that I need them to help me remember them. Finally, I set the daily activities out each day after school. Sometimes, they are a simple gift or highlighting an aspect of the Lutheran church. At other times, there might be a full lesson period. They can be a good way to start the school day. Organization is key to making Little Luther a success in your classroom!
