Chapel is an integral part of the week for almost all Lutheran schools. It’s a chance to sing hymns and pray together as a student body. Students get to interact with the pastor and other leaders of the church. Boys and girls that may not go to church regularly can experience what it is like to be part of the body of Christ. Despite all the amazing benefits of chapel it can still feel like a burden when it comes time for your class to lead! Take the stress out of planning with these chapel ideas for upper elementary students.
An Unforgettable Object Lesson
I once watched a pastor presenting a message to children in which he used a raw egg as a visual aid. You can probably guess where this is going. The plastic container he had brought to contain the egg proved inadequate as the egg bounced over the side after the pastor dropped it with a bit too much force. The shocked look on the pastor’s face combined with a sticky gooey puddle all over the carpeted church steps made for a chapel message that would not be soon forgotten. I’m not advocating for the use of raw eggs in chapel services but trying to share the message in a memorable way is a great goal. Bring in a fun visual aid. Plan a class skit. Teach the school a new song. Instead of a regular prayer, try the popcorn prayer method.
