By grace, through faith in Jesus Christ alone. My sons have the privilege of having a theology professor for a grandfather, and every week he video chats with my two oldest for what they like to call “Papa Class”. Right now he’s walking them through Luther’s Large Catechism. A few weeks back their homework was simply to memorize a phrase that he said they needed to remember and repeat to themselves for the rest of their lives. My dad is not given to exaggeration or sentiment so they could tell he meant it and that it was important for them to pay attention. The phrase was, “By grace, through faith in Jesus Christ alone.” It’s all about grace. We can never do anything to earn the unbelievable gift of salvation that is ours through Jesus.
God’s Grace is a Gift
It’s hard for us to put our own efforts aside though. Sometimes we think that if we just pray harder, God will reward us. If we feel extra sorry about our sins, we will earn extra forgiveness. We seek to impress God with our good works when the only thing we should be doing is opening our hands to receive his gifts. Even the very act of holding on to his promises (faith) is not something we do but something the Holy Spirit works in us.
