Love is a feeling. That is the general consensus among people today. Love is the warm fuzzy feeling you get when you care about someone else. It is interesting to note that this is not the definition Jesus uses! Love is not a feeling but an action. It is putting someone else’s needs above your own and pouring yourself out for their sake. That is exactly what Jesus did on the cross which is why it is the most perfect example of love. What better time to teach you students the true meaning of love than St. Valentine’s Day!
An Example of Love
Legends abound about the character and life of St. Valentine. Some records say he married Christians in secret when weddings were forbidden by the Roman emperor. We can’t say for sure the details of Valentine’s life, but it is almost certain that he lived around A.D. 200 and was most likely martyred for his faith. And what more do we need? Jesus said, “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” Valentine, following the example of Jesus, laid down his life to show others what it means to follow Christ. How fitting then that his name is given to the day love is celebrated.
