Samson, what a guy. He has got to have led one of the most colorful lives of any Bible character. First, an angelic messenger that may or may not have been the pre-incarnate Christ announced his birth! Second, he was a judge of Israel tasked with protecting the Israelites from the Philistines. Finally, he had a fiery temper, a love of beautiful women, and self-control issues, a volatile cocktail of vices that led to some memorable encounters. Samson had great victories where he single-handedly defeated a thousand men armed with nothing more than a donkey’s jawbone. But ultimately, his sins caught up with him, and his enemies captured and blinded him before throwing him in prison.

A Lesson from Samson
However, you know the rest of the story. Unable to see or be distracted by anything else around him, he realizes where his trust should always have been placed. He cries out to God for mercy, and God allows him one last great triumph before Samson dies. We, like Samson, get so easily distracted from our goal by the pleasures and entertainment the world offers. However, we are not called to run after the acclimations of the world or great wealth or popularity. We are called to be faithful to what God has given us to do. Don’t get distracted from your mission!
