What Lent activities do you use in the classroom? Lent is a season that is very common in the Christian classroom, but it is rarely well-known by students. They may think that it is about giving up a certain treat, but there are more details that they need to know. It is important to spend time each year talking to students about Lent.
How Do You Remember Lent?
As a child growing up in Michigan, Lent services often transitioned the cold and snowy winters to the chilly days of spring. It brings memories of soup dinners and walks with my friends to the corner gas station to grab a treat between school and the 4:00 service. It also brought conversations about giving something up, but I am not sure I ever really understood the point of that nor saw someone follow through on that. On a more serious note, I also remember many great Lenten hymns that I still cherish today. How can you help your students connect with Lent on a deeper level?
Lent Activities for You
Depending on the age of your students, you may be considering Lent lessons in different ways. You could use a mini book that explains the overview of this topic in simple text with pictures that students can color.
Maybe your students are a little older, and you want an activity to decorate a bulletin board. A craftivity with a writing component might be perfect for you.
You could also use a flip book to hang in the hall. Perhaps you have upper elementary students, and you are looking for a more detailed lesson in an interactive notebook.
Finally, you might be a middle school teacher, and you are searching for some sketch notes for your students or a quick bulletin board idea.
