A few weeks ago, I was teaching my middle son the meaning to the fourth petition of the Lord’s Prayer. It reads, “Give us this day our daily bread.” Luther’s meaning for that particular petition has a long list of things that are meant by “daily bread.” We got to the end of the list and my son asked, “Didn’t God give us couches and cats?” (We happened to be sitting on a couch with a house cat purring next to us.) I explained that when Luther said, “house”, he meant everything in the house as well and that no space could be big enough to write down every good gift that God gives to us.

Like a Father to his Children
That’s what Jesus wanted his disciples to see when he taught them the Lord’s Prayer. As creatures, we are dependent on God for everything down to the very air we breathe. We’re exactly like little children helpless without their father to care for them. Every time we pray the Lord’s Prayer, we are reminded of this! So, we come before God not with our hands full of everything we have to offer him, but with empty hands ready to be filled with his blessings.
