We are all pretty familiar with our personal talents, and we are pretty good at recognizing them in our friends too. Even children will be able to tell you who is the fastest in the class. Who is the best reader. Who is quickest at math facts. The Bible says the church is like a body. We are all different, designed to do different things well to make the church function well. But sometimes we can get so focused on the gift that we stayed turned in on ourselves and forget the point of the gift. The gifts we have are to be used in the service of others. It’s never about us. And God doesn’t always give things to do that we’re good at.
It’s Not About You!
Jonah thought he didn’t have the gift of evangelism, but God sent him to Nineveh anyway. Zacchaeus wasn’t exactly the most hospitable of people, but Jesus picked him to host a dinner party. Moses was a lousy public speaker, but God told him to deliver a message to Pharaoh. It’s helpful to stop focusing on which gifts we have and don’t have. The real spiritual gifts test we should be asking ourselves is, “Who are my neighbors?” It turns the focus inside out and puts you into the world serving with all the talents and abilities God has given you, some of which you may not even know you have!
