Usually when we hear the word Gospel, our mind immediately goes to the beginning of the New Testament and the story of Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross. And rightly so! Would you ever go looking for the Gospel say in the book of Exodus? But a closer look at the Bible story of the Exodus can reveal why it is the redemption story of the Old Testament.

A Wonderful Bible Story
First, God is doing the saving. God picks the nation of Israel through no merit of their own and actually specifically because it was a weak and helpless nation that could bring nothing to the table. That’s grace! Second, he brings them through the Red Sea and gives them a new identity as his chosen nation. Sounds a lot like baptism! Third, he writes his law on their hearts and sets them apart to be different from the people around them just as Christians are called to live faithfully in a fallen world. Finally, God continually refers to himself as the God who brought them up out of Egypt. It is how he wants to be known by the people of Israel. How do we know God? Through the story of Jesus!
