Updating Your Religion Curriculum

How are you updating your religion curriculum?

Summer has finally arrived! Therefore, my classroom is all cleaned up for the year, my inventory and purchase orders have been turned in, and my report cards have been mailed. In other words, I am looking forward to slow days filled with long walks in the cool, morning breeze, large stretches of time to design for Teach by Faith, and spending time with my friends and family.

However, these extra moments of life always bring about more time for curriculum review. I try to rotate through the subjects, and this year, I am working on grammar and writing. Similarly, I like to do the same with my faith-based curriculum.

Questions for Updating Your Religion Curriculum

How engaged are students? Let’s be real. Textbooks are boring. Read the assignment. Answer the questions. Complete the activity. No, thank you. I love project-based learning because it gives my content meaning. Take a family vacation with Moses? Therefore, pack your suitcase, bring your sunglasses, and grab some road trip snacks for a great adventure!

Is it comprehensive? The more time I spend as a teacher, the more I develop a full understanding of the skills and content my students need. My memory curriculum was inspired by a student who asked for homework to practice her memory. After years of teaching Lutheran theology to many non-Lutheran families, I wanted to find a way to clear teach the holy days. They take these projects home and teach their families about them, too.

Are you just looking for a refresh? When it comes to decor and activities, it is fun to add something new for your students. I use the Narnia decor, and it is time to purchase a few new touches that have gotten dusty and worn. On the other hand, the Luther on the Ledge project is one of my most popular resources, and my students learn a lot about the Reformation from these mini lessons.

If you are looking to make some changes to your religion curriculum, here are some resources to check out in my store.
