The Hammer That Echoed Round the World

Few historical events have impacted the church as significantly as the Reformation. God used Martin Luther to bring back the clear light of the Gospel that had become obscured through years of wrong teachings and confusing practices on the part of the church. Still today we use Luther’s prolific writings to teach doctrine and instruct our children in God’s truth. Learning the history of the Lutheran Reformation is an important part of Lutheran education.

Reformation Lessons

My kids enjoy learning about Martin Luther in part because they like looking at the detailed picture book we own that includes a terrifying picture of a thunderstorm and a very frightened Luther cowering under a tree. My middle son’s favorite character in the drama is Tetzel “because his name sounds like pretzel.” Which is suppose is appropriate given his country of origin. But there is no doubt that this is a complicated story to teach. It involves understanding a bit of philosophy, church practice and recognizing that sometimes leaders get things wrong. But ultimately, the Reformation is a story of God’s continued care and love for his church.
