watch or wave

Do You Watch or Wave on Palm Sunday?

Where would you have been on Palm Sunday? I think we’d all like to say that we would have been part of the crowd lining the streets throwing off their coats, waving palm branches are crying, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” They were happy to have a king riding into their city. Never mind the consequences, they were ready to follow Jesus to the end of the earth if they had to. They were all in. But there was another group present that day. The Pharisees were watching quietly on the sidelines deeply disturbed that Jesus was about to shake up their lives tremendously. If Jesus kept stirring up the crowds, Rome would descend on Jerusalem in wrath, and the Pharisees would lose their place of importance.

The Lesson of the Palm Sunday Story

I think sometimes this can be our attitude toward Jesus also. We like to worship him and don’t mind following him as long as we aren’t asked to sacrifice anything that we hold dear. We’ll follow as long as it’s comfortable, as long as we get what we want and what makes us happy. We’ll follow Jesus as long as it’s convenient, as long as we don’t have to die to ourselves. But with that attitude we make gods of ourselves for being Jesus’ disciple requires following all the way to the cross.
