New Lutheran Reformation Party Ideas

At the end of October many people are busily carving their pumpkins and dipping their apples to get ready for a Halloween bash. But many Lutheran schools skip the ghouls and goblins in favor of a monk and a hammer. That’s right! It’s time to start thinking about your Reformation party! It’s the one day a year that a sixteenth century monk gets to be the life of the party.

Reformation Resources

Growing up, the big Reformation party at my school was the highlight of the whole year. The church would get in on the action as well and the gym would be decorated with games and treat booths. (This was before the ‘trunk-or-treat’ idea took over.) We would wear costumes to school, and finish our study of the great Reformer before taking part in the general festivities. This tradition shaped my understanding of October 31st so much that I felt sorry for those who simply celebrate Halloween little knowing that they were missing out on the deeper significance of the day.

Resources for Elementary School

If you would like to make a meaningful impression on your students this Reformation day, try adding a Reformation Escape Room activity to your party! Your students will love using their secret code to unlock clues about the life and work of Martin Luther. The game is well laid out and requires little preparation on the part of the teacher. Several versions of the game are included to allow multiple groups to play at the same time. This escape room game is a wonderful way to review the highlights of the Reformation while having fun with classmates!
